How to Install Mods on PokeMMO

Written by HeavyBreathing

How it works PokeMMO is a free client that runs on top of official Pokemon game files (ROMs). You supply the ROMs yourself, PokeMMO does not distribute them. Each ROM unlocks a different region to play in.
Required
Pokemon Black or White
Unova Region
NDS ROM. Either version works. Unlocks Unova and is mandatory for the client.
Required
Pokemon FireRed
Kanto Region
GBA ROM. Unlocks the Kanto region.
Required
Pokemon Emerald
Hoenn Region
GBA ROM. Unlocks the Hoenn region.
Required
Pokemon Platinum
Sinnoh Region
NDS ROM. Platinum specifically — not Diamond or Pearl. Unlocks Sinnoh.
Required
Pokemon HeartGold or SoulSilver
Johto Region
NDS ROM. Either version works. Unlocks Johto.

Adding ROMs to PokeMMO

Same process on all platforms

Once you have your ROM files, add them through the PokeMMO client before logging in for the first time.

Standard: All Platforms
  1. Open PokeMMO and go to the login screen.
  2. Click or tap Game Management (below the login fields).
  3. Select Add ROM and navigate to your ROM file.
  4. Repeat for each ROM you want to add.
  5. Log in. The corresponding region will now be available in-game.

On desktop you can also drop ROM files directly into the roms/ folder inside the PokeMMO directory and they will be detected automatically on next launch.

Legal Distributing ROM files is illegal. You must dump them yourself from physical cartridges you own, or source them through legal means. PokeMMO does not provide or endorse ROM downloads.
How Mods Work Mods in PokeMMO are installed through the built-in Mod Management screen on the login page, before you log in. They use .zip or .pk3 file formats. All official mods are posted on the PokeMMO forums and are safe to use.

What are String Mods?

In PokeMMO, "strings" are the text and dialogue files the game uses for every on-screen message — battle results, NPC dialogue, healing prompts, PC box interactions, and more. By default these all wait for you to dismiss them, which adds up fast during grinding.

A string mod replaces those files with shorter or blank versions so the game skips past them automatically. The savings are small per interaction but stack up significantly over long sessions of horde farming, shiny hunting, or gym reruns.

Speed Version Every dialogue box is blanked out for maximum throughput. Best for experienced players who already know all the prompts.
Story Version Only the most repetitive interactions are shortened. NPC and story dialogue is kept intact. Better for newer players or first playthroughs.
Starter Pack The combination of HD Battle Sprites, Kanto Graphics Patch, and Music Remastered is widely regarded as the essential first-time setup. Install all three and the game feels like a different experience.

Installing a Mod

Same process on all platforms. Done from the login screen, not in-game.

All platforms use the same Mod Management screen. You access it before you log in, from the PokeMMO login page. Mods come as .zip or .pk3 files downloaded from the forums.

Standard Install: All Platforms
  1. Download the mod file from its forum thread. Save it somewhere accessible on your device.
  2. Open PokeMMO. On the login screen, look for the Mod Management button (bottom area of the screen, before you enter your credentials).
  3. Click or tap Import Mod.
  4. Navigate to the mod file and select it. It will appear in the mod list.
  5. Make sure the toggle next to it is enabled.
  6. Log in as normal. The mod is now active.

If the mod is a theme, it also needs to be selected at Settings > Interface > Theme after installation. A newly installed theme will appear in that dropdown list.

Note You need to be logged in to the PokeMMO forums to see the download attachments on mod threads. Create a free account at forums.pokemmo.com if you have not already.

Platform Notes

Platform-specific details and differences

Desktop is the simplest platform. Download the PokeMMO client from pokemmo.com/en/downloads, extract it, and run the launcher. Windows, macOS, and Linux are all supported. Linux users can also install via Flatpak from Flathub, which is the recommended method on Steam Deck.

File Location
WindowsPokeMMO folder where you extracted the client, under mods/
macOSApplications > PokeMMO > mods/

You can also drop mod files directly into the mods/ folder and they will appear in Mod Management automatically on next launch.

PokeMMO on Android is an APK sideload, not a Play Store app. Download the APK from pokemmo.com/en/downloads on your device, enable "Install from Unknown Sources" in your settings, and install it.

Mod Import on Android
  1. Download the mod file to your device using your browser. Your Downloads folder is fine.
  2. Open PokeMMO. On the login screen, tap Mod Management, then Import Mod.
  3. Your device file picker will open. Navigate to Downloads and select the mod file.
  4. Enable it in the list and log in.

If the file picker does not show .zip or .pk3 files, switch the filter from "Images" or "Documents" to "All Files".

If mod import fails on Android

A known Android bug can prevent a second import attempt in the same session. If it fails, clear the app data from your Android settings and try again. Make sure you remember your login credentials before doing this.

PokeMMO is not on the App Store. It requires sideloading via AltStore, Sideloadly, or Signulous. AltStore is the recommended free option. Once installed, add the PokeMMO source in AltStore at https://pokemmo.com/altstore/ and install from there.

Getting the Mod File onto iOS
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Safari and go to the mod's forum thread.
  2. Long-press the download link and choose "Download Linked File". This saves it to your iCloud Downloads folder.
  3. Open the Files app and confirm the file is visible under iCloud Drive > Downloads.
  4. Open PokeMMO. On the login screen, tap Mod Management, then Import Mod.
  5. Navigate to iCloud Drive > Downloads and select the file.
  6. Enable it in the list and log in.
Known Issue File picker opens but tapping the mod file does nothing

On some iOS versions, tapping a mod file in the picker closes the picker without installing anything. There is a built-in fix.

Fix: Alternative File Selection Mode
  1. Go to the Client Management screen from the Mod Management menu.
  2. Look at the top-right corner. There is a small settings cog icon.
  3. Tap the cog once. A message will appear: "Alternative file selection mode enabled".
  4. Tap Import Mod again. The file picker will reopen using a different method.
  5. Select your mod file. It will install correctly this time.

This setting resets when you fully close the app. Tap the cog once again before importing next time.

Cog tap does nothing

The cog is only active on the Client Management screen specifically. Force-close PokeMMO, reopen it, navigate back to Client Management, then try again.

File still does not appear

Open the Files app and move the mod file from iCloud Drive into On My iPhone/iPad. Local storage is more reliably accessible to third-party apps on some iOS versions.

Re-signing If you use a free Apple ID with AltStore, the app expires every 7 days and needs re-signing. AltStore handles this automatically as long as it is open in the background on your PC/Mac while your device is on the same Wi-Fi.

Common Questions

Will mods get me banned?
Cosmetic and UI mods posted on the official forums are permitted. Mods that automate actions, alter gameplay, or give unfair advantages are not. Check the forum thread for any staff approval notes if you are unsure about a specific mod.
A mod stopped working after a game update.
Game updates can break mods that patch the files changed in that update. Disable the broken mod and check the original forum thread for an updated version. Running an outdated broken mod can sometimes cause client crashes or visual glitches.
Can I run multiple mods at the same time?
Yes. Install them all through Mod Management and enable each one. If two mods modify the same file, only the higher-priority mod in the list takes effect. You can drag mods to reorder them.
I cannot see the download attachment on the forum thread.
You must be logged in to a PokeMMO forums account to view and download attachments. Register for free at forums.pokemmo.com.
Where is the best place to discover new mods?
The official Client Customization forum is the primary source. The Best Mods Compilation thread linked above is a great curated starting point. The PokeMMO Discord also has a mods channel where the community shares updates and new releases.
